Verge Opines: Perhaps I have watched one episode of the action-drama "24" too many, but I am convinced there is a way to ask a lawyer a question and get the answer to that question.
The members of the Senate Judiciary Commitee questioning Judge Alito in the confirmation hearing should demand answers to their questions. For one to accept Judge Alito's waffling equivocations, allow his sly evasions and tolerate his selective memory lapses is to sanction deception and evasion. Such comtemptible behavior of a Judge should be recognized by the Committee members as morally unacceptable (if not illegal).
A prospective Supreme Court Judge should be obligated to meet the minimal standards required of any witness speaking under oath, "to tell the whole truth, and nothing but the truth". Any lesser standard is simply unacceptable (even in traffic court) and should be grounds for dismissal (for any Supreme Court nominee)
Honesty and Integrity should be the sine qua non for admission to the Supreme Court. Is that a radical idea?
Needless to say, these qualities are not required for politicians in Washington these days...Thus, all the more reason why Americans should demand the qualities of Honesty and Integrity in their Supreme Court Judges, especially when you recognize that these Judges receive Lifetime Appointments, and can't be voted out in 4 years time.
Moreover, why NOT use Truth Serum? It is harmless, effective and significantly less costly than the deplorable charade currently being played out in Washington. I'm sure Jack Bauer of 24 could find out why Judge Alito was a member of a racist and sexist organization at Princeton University, why Judge Alito decided that it was lawful to stripsearch an innocent 10 year-old girl, and why the man in the red tie (above) would require a fullgrown woman to seek the permission of her husband for an abortion...
[For details of Alito's outrageous qualifications and extremist views download the Judicial Commitee transcript]
I'm sure Jack would have these answers in about 5.3 seconds.

A modest proposal, Verge, an excellent question and a good idea. The answer to your question "why not use truth serum" is lamentably simple:
Big Money=Power=Damnable Lies
They have the power and the money; they will use their power to keep the money; and they will need to lie damnably to keep it all going.
If this is a dealbreaker for you, Verge, may I suggest that you relocate to the Tibetan paradise of Shambhala?
Vergelimbo is honored to be associated with Swift's masterful satire: "A Modest Proposal". Verge's proposal is certainly more modest.[ie no babies to eat] I watch the hearings in awe as the smarmy git, Alito, dodges all relevant questions, waffles like a Mad Belgian and employs mind "racking" searches to no avail regarding his membership in "Concerned Alumni of Princeton". As Lou Reed says: "Stick a fork in 'em, he's done"

Let Alito suffer the torture of a Guantanamo prisoner, or better yet, Abu Ghraib. Leave Jack Bauer for the terrorists...
Kick it verge
First off: Kick 'it!
With that said:
Is that a radical idea?
Absolutely not. You know, of course, the lame Senatorial explanation for givin' them such leeway is to avoid the appearance of posing Litmus Test questions. Even euphemistically the process is disingenously rigid and, thus, lacking in honesty.
That's fucked up, there.
