Terrachoice explains "Greenwashing"

Posted by vergelimbo On 11:33 PM 6 comments

This CTV interview clearly defines the concept and intention of "greenwashing" and alerts the consumer to the deceptive tactics marketers employ to misinform the public regarding the "green" claims of various products. The Six Sins of Greenwashing, as defined by Terrachoice, are explored and examples of each type of deception are given. [More related videos follow this clip]

What are some of the more spurious or misleading claims you have seen in recent advertising or packaging? Leave me a comment and include an example of greenwashing if possible...

This is a fantastic video. please who is the news agency?

hmmm greenwashing....

i am more interested in the little boy news reporter. i have never seen a set up like it.

well what can we make of this little boy in the expensive suit replete with pocket square in the oakey room with fireplace burning away behind him (think david frost). is this how canada makes people seem intelligent and the subject deemed one that is due intense deliberation??? does his momma know he has a job with the ctv, or in true canuck fashion, did she actually give him that job, knowing how capable he was, after the necessary b.s. alterations had taken place.

is this anchorwashing??

Hi,

LetsGoGreen.biz is an online company selling eco-friendly products to the homeowner. We have the products that let you "go green" at home. We have a full line of home water conservation items. Please let your members know about us. A link would be great. I would also like to speak to you about our fundraising program. You send folks to our site, they purchase products and you receive 25% of the sale. Great way to promote green products while you raise money for your site. Contact me via e-mail or at 770-480-2886.

I'm starting to see "green" claims made by oil companies, chemical manufacturers and recently Clorox bought the uber green "Burts Bees" line of products.
I think that may be the trend: dirty mega-corps buying up truly green companies to "wash " themselves free of their filth:

To Anonymous in Bangkok: In what way are you interested in the wunderboy reporter? Truly his mannerisms reek of maple syrup, and his pronuciation is flawless and keen, but David Frost? BTW:What is this "matronage" allegation all about? And is your name Ben?

Anonymous [letsgo green] Thanks for the link...I may contact you shortly

MIKE: Thanks for the link...I heard that Burt's ex screwed himout of millions on that sale to Clorox

Can anyone provide me with examples of greenwashing they have seen?

Not really greenwashing, but my pet peeve is car ads where nature is the backdrop. The one I have in mind right now is for a hybrid SUV. This family drives their monster "sport" vehicle into the woods, off-road, and parks and gets out. There's a couple deer standing nearby, and they don't run. The ad is playing up how quiet hybrids are. That's real nice, but how environmentally friendly is it to drive your car off road? And let's face it, most SUV's rarely leave the city. It's ironic that they use nature to promote consumer items that help destroy it.
